Cupcakes take their name from the teacups used in the olden days to measure out the ingredients. In the late 1700s, American bakers measured ingredients by weight (i.e., ounces, pounds, etc). To do it properly, you really needed a scale.
Food historians tell us that the earliest cupcake recipe dates back to 1796. It was a huge hit because it used teacups for measuring (1 cup butter, 2 cups sugar, 3 cups flour, 4 eggs, 1 cup of milk, and 1 spoonful of soda). Some people called them “number cakes” or “1-2-3-4” cakes but, no matter the name, these “cup cakes” saved an incredible amount of time in the kitchen.
